It was a pleasant summer evening and I thought I would do some detecting at my favorite high school playground which never disappoints. I dug up $0.88 in change, a couple of interesting rings and a strange item that looks like it has a function of some kind.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYTIsw7siAQf5Q0nmL8yWh8w5ORddrNfm4wDJ0FzjWRYhuhc4mRZaRQZn0k3v_YH8_2oapUvCtWoFsziVjS_HbxINkAqaZy-1GRfe6dMQAo7CYz6TlIepU1cAJUWKnUkpEos-19Bfmoj_J7djWe_qp-T0mDEwk81_qvu0u5js7wZA-hGSNtf5sTIfu/s1851/WS%206-11-22%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1103" data-original-width="1851" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYTIsw7siAQf5Q0nmL8yWh8w5ORddrNfm4wDJ0FzjWRYhuhc4mRZaRQZn0k3v_YH8_2oapUvCtWoFsziVjS_HbxINkAqaZy-1GRfe6dMQAo7CYz6TlIepU1cAJUWKnUkpEos-19Bfmoj_J7djWe_qp-T0mDEwk81_qvu0u5js7wZA-hGSNtf5sTIfu/s320/WS%206-11-22%20(1).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCTNYjleJ4L-XK7OF3we0skB-DwgGKT12s1E35sZOucWt9mOhrxbnK1ZT-fyVBLozsm3jC30BwaTwQSBqmoQwmKWLDG5PZQi2Br_BA99Zb3id9ATi2lcq8qF7KXmSWT-oZq6bF5_Wi48fLqd_T2S_-BfO7blaPPMVkjuFE8hqL5BqwuLgZ-hdbr6Ld/s2021/WS%206-11-22%20(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1451" data-original-width="2021" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCTNYjleJ4L-XK7OF3we0skB-DwgGKT12s1E35sZOucWt9mOhrxbnK1ZT-fyVBLozsm3jC30BwaTwQSBqmoQwmKWLDG5PZQi2Br_BA99Zb3id9ATi2lcq8qF7KXmSWT-oZq6bF5_Wi48fLqd_T2S_-BfO7blaPPMVkjuFE8hqL5BqwuLgZ-hdbr6Ld/s320/WS%206-11-22%20(2).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The ring on the left looks like it has an ankh symbol, while the one on the right has fake diamonds but the ring itself is copper which is an unusual combination<br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2uYVDR_h7iL3vvyZ_bTKbEQsVBUNo1moalrOWasnBpWX3tbD9ms8bJLVuNg2NXxDt6kuV2lk8itJAl13_02IZZh9nFYjcgHdrI33BAqH7KQQryITXWCEpO0gnOZtaQ8ZHqKVh81eQRZCG5XsWooDyuqcGRLs2gHvNASOc9aJWxVgthJ7JzhETi_v6/s1532/WS%206-11-22%20(3).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1299" data-original-width="1532" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2uYVDR_h7iL3vvyZ_bTKbEQsVBUNo1moalrOWasnBpWX3tbD9ms8bJLVuNg2NXxDt6kuV2lk8itJAl13_02IZZh9nFYjcgHdrI33BAqH7KQQryITXWCEpO0gnOZtaQ8ZHqKVh81eQRZCG5XsWooDyuqcGRLs2gHvNASOc9aJWxVgthJ7JzhETi_v6/s320/WS%206-11-22%20(3).jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I have no idea what this bizarre object is. Today I went detecting in the city park where I dug up $1.20 in change:<br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIZ78G1FQ9mFsF-W3vSztUOPsl7e33t-oajfzsAjN9sG8Y_JqTS7f5ajB9A26V5cXw5fCqmpiv1eRy7Jt8CRLuuRjGiwT83WJe0uOYZAUIaM6KDdHhd5AysugtOr1f8cuUnO_a8l3htwQ/s2000/IMG_0086.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1418" data-original-width="2000" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIZ78G1FQ9mFsF-W3vSztUOPsl7e33t-oajfzsAjN9sG8Y_JqTS7f5ajB9A26V5cXw5fCqmpiv1eRy7Jt8CRLuuRjGiwT83WJe0uOYZAUIaM6KDdHhd5AysugtOr1f8cuUnO_a8l3htwQ/s320/IMG_0086.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Aside from removing junk, and hazardous items like nails and rusty bolts from the bark chips, I also turned up this marvelous mother son token. The day after she took possession I went over with her to help her trim some low tree branches and then set to work detecting the backyard.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">We had met the previous owner and she had said that the back yard had originally been a bit of a junkyard with all kinds of scrap metal strewn around. It had been covered over with soil more recently. So there were a lot of signals for me to detect in the rich loamy soil, but a lot of them were junk - scraps of iron, steel, bits of pipe etc. nothing too exciting. <br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy0tdhmyvnH6OhTNHY1yt02Rq1PL9gvbLUnCz97URy0PjOMF5gM3qv6QP8h6cdwoPPtj-GQKW6GldpLbuHfXY7Rednn_X-l7D_MXu9PfkNByviZgJgJUm2YcJCPeG3hNjk6KTkHdxFz4c/s1000/Dianes+6-6-21+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="824" data-original-width="1000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy0tdhmyvnH6OhTNHY1yt02Rq1PL9gvbLUnCz97URy0PjOMF5gM3qv6QP8h6cdwoPPtj-GQKW6GldpLbuHfXY7Rednn_X-l7D_MXu9PfkNByviZgJgJUm2YcJCPeG3hNjk6KTkHdxFz4c/s320/Dianes+6-6-21+%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">What was interesting was this large "MEDAL of HONOR Primary Judges Award" that I found right next to the rear deck. I went around the outside of the barns and found very little of interest. In the vehicle (not farm equipment) parking area I found lots of modern coins, many were "stinkin' Lincolns" that were rotted out. The metal plate is from a "submersible sewage pump" - typical for a farm I guess. Some .22 shells, a broken spoon and brass hose sprayer.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">It was a pleasant hour and a half despite lackluster finds. It's just nice to get out in the sun and get into the zone. Metal detecting is a lot like fishing - you don't necessarily expect to catch fish. It's just a relaxing way to be outdoors.<br /></span></p>Guy Marsdenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03755513621855290095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8358244470338324215.post-39621972370923444152021-04-07T15:12:00.000-04:002021-04-07T15:12:58.889-04:00First dig of 2021, more coins at the playground<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcJREw1nmhC9MivW5I9y3o_xvT5Swj355P7BNpau7wzbQFFHZ0E3bWpZwME3KwhA9aXhadg0QfJKavkfG9Xhqcessll5BAZ1rIab8TxuTMh63LsqAlMfF09RFpemKjhJ2_ZDdI2o9c_JA/s2048/Playground+4-7-21.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcJREw1nmhC9MivW5I9y3o_xvT5Swj355P7BNpau7wzbQFFHZ0E3bWpZwME3KwhA9aXhadg0QfJKavkfG9Xhqcessll5BAZ1rIab8TxuTMh63LsqAlMfF09RFpemKjhJ2_ZDdI2o9c_JA/w400-h266/Playground+4-7-21.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Today is the first time I got out and did some serious metal detecting since last October. I ended the season last year by finding 59 dimes spilled in the playground, so I thought I would go back. The kids in this neighborhood clearly have money to spill! I started by finding a number of quarters and several large pieces of stiff wire that seemed to be left over from chain-link fence assembly. I was pleased to remove those as they were obvious sharp hazards for children.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Then I worked my way into the corner near the blue spinner and my metal detector went nuts. I thought it was malfunctioning because it was beeping constantly. But when I got down with my pin pointer, there were signals everywhere!<br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUrsVG_ZEzGVuoiuH1X5JNbUwVGr7fW4iX6OY70hJ7mAYkjZjWEr0CCCt-MSwhdJxmGaZoFQxETq7wFxrONwrUIYljiyNDq3G1y6amNA57cS8HtBDNq18IP_PmzvTkZpYWSReddbLlzpg/s2000/Playground+-+dimes.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUrsVG_ZEzGVuoiuH1X5JNbUwVGr7fW4iX6OY70hJ7mAYkjZjWEr0CCCt-MSwhdJxmGaZoFQxETq7wFxrONwrUIYljiyNDq3G1y6amNA57cS8HtBDNq18IP_PmzvTkZpYWSReddbLlzpg/s320/Playground+-+dimes.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I would locate a strong signal and move a few bark chips aside and there would be clusters of dimes. Talk about a coin spill! Ultimately I found a total of $5.90 in dimes in an area covering only a few square feet. Also 10 quarters and 3 pennies for a total of $11.40! Wow, that's a pretty good haul for about an hour's work. I also found a perfectly good set of earbuds.<br /></span><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRr_RJejnw1ZX-KErRqa-qb7NLT2w_ZFDyQ38OshzFdBDZXYt2oU83mvGhfP-nslhhL312Ug8gzx9NOtJzjq_avbsyEXu0D6v16JQaTuuzzTqKg3IAg46oJMpHrEqAdsGvu40zxUlyQh0/s2000/IMG_0571.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1547" data-original-width="2000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRr_RJejnw1ZX-KErRqa-qb7NLT2w_ZFDyQ38OshzFdBDZXYt2oU83mvGhfP-nslhhL312Ug8gzx9NOtJzjq_avbsyEXu0D6v16JQaTuuzzTqKg3IAg46oJMpHrEqAdsGvu40zxUlyQh0/s320/IMG_0571.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEYaTgcwTdN-g8TkS_Jo0SXTV0WKuIt9EqxE7IuKhnRi0hsDBLpkrQyUkrVypGlL6qKp-NxmXn1SdXnDflR1EjzrWosyX81Yxl3oZx7hp_snhrIL5eUfMcpNlg2RngLRGWWzOxzasr0s/s2000/IMG_0573.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1382" data-original-width="2000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEYaTgcwTdN-g8TkS_Jo0SXTV0WKuIt9EqxE7IuKhnRi0hsDBLpkrQyUkrVypGlL6qKp-NxmXn1SdXnDflR1EjzrWosyX81Yxl3oZx7hp_snhrIL5eUfMcpNlg2RngLRGWWzOxzasr0s/s320/IMG_0573.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">It looks like I am going to have to go back to this park more often. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In metal detecting we often see "surface finds" - items just laying out in the open. In this case I was exploring a historic site near my home that dated back at least 100 years. Hidden against the brick wall of the building was this 8 pound splitting maul head with just a scrap of the original shaft remaining. It was in great condition, this is what it looked like when I found it:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj71vBvUuKbrF8OB4jnD2p9itacwlFj8XCiURTDCsNu7nOTi5AvmrxXTDRSZIPrbk3qZSI9TALHbrUOZvEi91ZtGIe6Bpg5lp0Yvh9NGQfZLQUOdzIu3Oy32m5TnoMHb19b0Q_Jk4FFxr4/s1600/Head1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj71vBvUuKbrF8OB4jnD2p9itacwlFj8XCiURTDCsNu7nOTi5AvmrxXTDRSZIPrbk3qZSI9TALHbrUOZvEi91ZtGIe6Bpg5lp0Yvh9NGQfZLQUOdzIu3Oy32m5TnoMHb19b0Q_Jk4FFxr4/s320/Head1.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm guessing it is around 50 - 70 years old. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I decided to make a new shaft for it so I could use it for splitting my firewood. I had an Ash board that I cut down the middle and glued up to make it thicker:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg309Wf8kWIPVTbXrIgpV9OSWeyFXc4oy2A2EzBZoASaMpHgGlYemOaaSJJs7pJI5HsSEaoWOLXfn4apZtlahJfoXJ2UQ5MLMX69pHONOyjhyphenhyphenU780hoGGuPAqnRhNUSsnTp7-Y42IudPwY/s1600/glue-up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="748" data-original-width="1600" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg309Wf8kWIPVTbXrIgpV9OSWeyFXc4oy2A2EzBZoASaMpHgGlYemOaaSJJs7pJI5HsSEaoWOLXfn4apZtlahJfoXJ2UQ5MLMX69pHONOyjhyphenhyphenU780hoGGuPAqnRhNUSsnTp7-Y42IudPwY/s320/glue-up.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Then I cut and shaped the 32" handle on my band saw and belt sander:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcbueaM5tMG9s9qs_LmlEj0A3hc-0xxc81Khmbk4jh-uwk9VXhn5se7e9CsO6mNVcrgPg1gVqaDcWyADIQYEBmNdTbwj8nQqHtcYcPNgUchb4oUDoDSIdiSIUFMwZbSWcxaAImfI4MJ40/s1600/Axe+%252B+handle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="668" data-original-width="1600" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcbueaM5tMG9s9qs_LmlEj0A3hc-0xxc81Khmbk4jh-uwk9VXhn5se7e9CsO6mNVcrgPg1gVqaDcWyADIQYEBmNdTbwj8nQqHtcYcPNgUchb4oUDoDSIdiSIUFMwZbSWcxaAImfI4MJ40/s320/Axe+%252B+handle.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl-YcsYULOREdJb23RrzHe6X2zOWoaCV0etOwyOotM48DAXEgpsgPNgKXLlrG7IHlqSTmnbZ8uTJmRGeFFVijJZrUw4YEkRvpvxwDQtooQaxTsk6aRBaR34MnVSf5gwL5Rp-g7qwPOrPY/s1600/Axe+head.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1286" data-original-width="1600" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl-YcsYULOREdJb23RrzHe6X2zOWoaCV0etOwyOotM48DAXEgpsgPNgKXLlrG7IHlqSTmnbZ8uTJmRGeFFVijJZrUw4YEkRvpvxwDQtooQaxTsk6aRBaR34MnVSf5gwL5Rp-g7qwPOrPY/s320/Axe+head.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I finished the handle and secured it to the head with a wedge I made from a scrap of rosewood. (I pounded in the wedge with the <a href="https://www.guydigsitup.com/2020/04/3-lb-cross-pein-hammer-dug-up-in-my.html" target="_blank">3lb cross pein hammer I dug up in my yard last week</a>). I put on a coat of linseed oil and went out to try it on some pine. It works perfectly! At 8 lbs this is a BEAST of a splitter!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I haven't posted recently because I have been detecting on the town school property and not finding anything exciting. Lots of gum wrappers, pull tabs etc. I did get about $4 in coins over that last week or so though. I call this my "Get Rich Slow Scheme". It's nice to get out during the pandemic and do social distancing and enjoy the nice sunny spring days.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I am a Quaker and I help to maintain the Meeting House building and grounds and have been doing some garden maintenance for the last few days. Today I decided to go over the lawn with my detector again. In the past I had not found much, but the ground conditions are ideal - moist soil is more conductive so I can find deeper signals.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0nZjeYWK8n8xO9QRPqNfAngkBOm1OFWIXZ1T7Qw_BnGi-nIWJiiFKWMQl3mxWtNymq2GHQueJS_BkTWylWKsG_15TSXbCti62Sy8Wll7X_2YVKijLXJj3V4zihjd6gl_T6urKtQxo0Wc/s1600/MH+5-8-20+%25285%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="925" data-original-width="1600" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0nZjeYWK8n8xO9QRPqNfAngkBOm1OFWIXZ1T7Qw_BnGi-nIWJiiFKWMQl3mxWtNymq2GHQueJS_BkTWylWKsG_15TSXbCti62Sy8Wll7X_2YVKijLXJj3V4zihjd6gl_T6urKtQxo0Wc/s320/MH+5-8-20+%25285%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">As I explored the lawn area I found several items that were over 8" down. The best find was this pocket watch, I bet this was missed by the person who lost it!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIUV6vk-DsT0bHzezFRnNzK7oTqKc4LyqrVSFf5_KQPxkksr-D_L0-0T7nvdbVK0zmE9KdIWX9VVkuu4on9b6rLyrOauv1cfkeHrspJhwQzLbH4U-dvCQXEi7cvKhOzqdg6yrL8ge3rCw/s1600/Pocket+watch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIUV6vk-DsT0bHzezFRnNzK7oTqKc4LyqrVSFf5_KQPxkksr-D_L0-0T7nvdbVK0zmE9KdIWX9VVkuu4on9b6rLyrOauv1cfkeHrspJhwQzLbH4U-dvCQXEi7cvKhOzqdg6yrL8ge3rCw/s320/Pocket+watch.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I was bored this afternoon and decided to get out the metal detector and take a swing around my yard. I worked around the garden beds thinking I might find coins spilled from pockets. I got a really strong signal and started digging. About 8" down I heard a "clink" of metal and as I started to open up the hole I saw rusty metal and assumed it was another piece of farm equipment scrap. Digging around it I was unable to get it out until I realized it had an extension that wasn't being picked up by the metal detector. So I trenched the hole out about a foot and eventually hauled this rusty old 3-lb cross peen hammer out. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I know it isn't mine, so it has been there at least 19 years and was probably dropped by the construction crew that built my house in 2000. It is in pretty good condition and the wood handle is still strong. I ground off most of the rust and will let the handle dry out for a while before I try wrapping it with tape to make it more friendly to hold. This will be a nice addition to my hammer collection!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Over 100 years ago my small dead-end road with about a dozen houses on it was a family farm. There are still open fields used for hay, or just kept cut down for open space. My neighbors Charlie and Jennifer have about 10 acres and the open field in front is 2-3 acres I'd guess. In the picture of the field above, you can see <a href="https://cdurfee.com/" target="_blank">Charlie's woodworking workshop</a> on the left, and mine is more hidden on the right.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Today I asked if I could detect on their field and I spent an hour or so wandering the perimeter and found a few old square nails and some piece of broken metal that might be from farm equipment.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihS5JHldlPmdAdijBDVoL8oIHQm6H8snriwjH6S164_fQKj1ZlTt6u7lAF5qOigS-_jNRW8OqMT_KWPnVesMuLc_83GuYls0iynNgC6jliBG51EunvJISlWl6SlE-P-WLWfArzXUNxzG8/s1600/DurfOdd+3-27-20+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihS5JHldlPmdAdijBDVoL8oIHQm6H8snriwjH6S164_fQKj1ZlTt6u7lAF5qOigS-_jNRW8OqMT_KWPnVesMuLc_83GuYls0iynNgC6jliBG51EunvJISlWl6SlE-P-WLWfArzXUNxzG8/s320/DurfOdd+3-27-20+%25281%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But the best find was a nice old pewter teaspoon measuring cup. Here are some close-up pictures:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I plan to spend more time on this field, but I just got a new permission nearby that is promising since there has been a home on the site since 1799 or so, so I'll be practicing "COVID-19 safe distancing" there tomorrow hopefully. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b>Update - next day: </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When I showed the measuring cup to my neighbor Charlie, he immediately recognized it as one the had been missing from a set for years and was delighted to have it back. He said it was a wedding gift from 1988. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here's a lovely note I got from Jennifer:</span><br />
<pre class="moz-quote-pre" wrap="">I AM THRILLED!!!!!!! We got this set of measuring spoons for our wedding in 1988, from my cousin Katie. In 1993, when we moved into the house, Charlie mounted the wooden holder on our cabinet. Shortly after that, we lost the teaspoon. I have spent 25 or so years seeing the empty spot in the set and feeling sad about it and wondering where it went. Many many thanks. Jennifer. </pre>
<pre class="moz-quote-pre" wrap=""> <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Here it is back in it's rightful place:</span></pre>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It was a lovely warm spring day so I went back to the local school. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">There
were quite a few families out on the school grounds enjoying the sunny
day. People are tired of being house bound with the COVID-19 pandemic. We all practiced responsible social distancing and
waved or said "HI" from over 20 feet away. There's a joke that when a Mainer was asked to keep 6 feet apart, her replied: "That's awful close!"</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I parked in a small lot off to the side and began detecting around the edges of the asphalt. Yes, that's my Chevy Volt behind me! No fossils fuel wasted on this adventure!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What is it with school kids and garish rings? I found this one out at the edge of the playing field, I think it's nickel plated brass. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My first day out detecting this year! The ice has not fully melted off the lake nearby and parts of the ground are still frozen in the shade. But it got up into the 40's (Fahrenheit) so it was nice enough to go dig. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNDHRgdGTZoijinug1gt18Yo8hvydTz785TQGLQzim38e0Kci8MkxQltyFwM6p9jJfjVPr0vPXyWC9S-4j4Xt65ODdkMl_43C45xrzZtNWI697ZH2ymnT7QotunvknMXROdbdFs9Y-fA/s1600/Frozen+mulch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNDHRgdGTZoijinug1gt18Yo8hvydTz785TQGLQzim38e0Kci8MkxQltyFwM6p9jJfjVPr0vPXyWC9S-4j4Xt65ODdkMl_43C45xrzZtNWI697ZH2ymnT7QotunvknMXROdbdFs9Y-fA/s320/Frozen+mulch.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I went to the town school playground which is covered with nearly a foot of bark chips. I found a few signals that read as quite deep and when I dug down below about 4" I hit the ice layer as you can see in the image above. I had to give up on some promising signals because of that ice layer!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One of the annoying things about school grounds is the pencils. The aluminum that holds the erasers on rings up as precious metal - just like the hated pull-tabs. I get excited every time - then . . . disappointment. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I got 74 cents in coins which were mostly near the surface. 2 coin spills of many coins included a nice ring shown below.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmELNYYoMaM1GnKbcfTyS1gKauMalZVp2X3dMricU6pzZVDp_tLefkXVFULvBLS2-GbKRFUXowT0V98qyO0dNYuCVdeu3-138DUfzB9ov7kqzLpoudJxSBeSuvJwrDp_747Uwfo0Chc9g/s1600/IMG_0462.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="690" data-original-width="1000" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmELNYYoMaM1GnKbcfTyS1gKauMalZVp2X3dMricU6pzZVDp_tLefkXVFULvBLS2-GbKRFUXowT0V98qyO0dNYuCVdeu3-138DUfzB9ov7kqzLpoudJxSBeSuvJwrDp_747Uwfo0Chc9g/s320/IMG_0462.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's junk jewelry with abalone and some kind of stones mounted in a plated brass ring.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The other ring has a cloisonne unicorn on it. Very cute!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQRCm6kstWa5yvPPm1Dni9TZew1QZIYUbL7-9dlk0sGCTEemZI7iRlWMZ96YLcf4mikVAFX3y-K2FugIfvg4qI_E4v2lpIU8YfzhODFcG99gIRgk1EELkCCZIySxKuh0dNzX0jv_i1ydU/s1600/IMG_0461.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="752" data-original-width="1000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQRCm6kstWa5yvPPm1Dni9TZew1QZIYUbL7-9dlk0sGCTEemZI7iRlWMZ96YLcf4mikVAFX3y-K2FugIfvg4qI_E4v2lpIU8YfzhODFcG99gIRgk1EELkCCZIySxKuh0dNzX0jv_i1ydU/s320/IMG_0461.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then there was this nice surface find - a chunk of quartz crystal.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6wwhNYW9zgqToOby7V0s2hgnDac_qr2m_R3wgRTBTgAV0G5MrOIPTb062EwXNOAJUwSAsx5H3R6VWcNRPJF5gKsq_utd7MnaJDFreMrjKRPq27hVlhgIZ9sihEjjnIGvJRUaXcPF7_AQ/s1600/IMG_0464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="785" data-original-width="1000" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6wwhNYW9zgqToOby7V0s2hgnDac_qr2m_R3wgRTBTgAV0G5MrOIPTb062EwXNOAJUwSAsx5H3R6VWcNRPJF5gKsq_utd7MnaJDFreMrjKRPq27hVlhgIZ9sihEjjnIGvJRUaXcPF7_AQ/s320/IMG_0464.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A very pleasant start to the season!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A week or so ago I went through all my finds and culled out the silver and gold scrap and sent it in to a reclaimer and got $23.89. Clearly it was mostly silver which is at around $16.oz these days.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm looking forward to this excuse to get outside while I'm socially isolating myself during this COVID-19 pandemic which is just beginning to hit Maine. The cool thing about detecting is that it is inherently social distancing as a hobby! We rarely detect together.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It was a very pleasant day on Labor Day today, overcast and mid '70's. I started by going over the playground where the digging is easy due to the 8+" of bark chips and I found several quarters. The first time I dug there this year was Memorial Day and I found over $7 in quarters! Today's quarter haul was only $2.25 but I'm happy!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">But then I started working around the perimeter of the athletic field very close to the asphalt walkway - staying clear of the actual designated playing areas. And that is where I found the cool items below.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The first interesting find was this large cheer leader pin. It had 2 pins originally, but one had bent over, and the other broke off.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We had nearly 2" of rain overnight recently and the soggy ground is great for detecting - the higher soil conductivity gives better readings from the metal detector. So I went over to my favorite haunt - the Flea Market site to see what I could find. I have gone over the whole site at least 3 times, but I keep finding more interesting items. Most are less than 2-3" down.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I met Bill today to go detecting in town. He had called and introduced himself a while back and this is the first time we have detected together. He has decades of experience and many amazing finds! We started digging an abandoned road but the weeds were pretty thick, the ground boggy and the finds not good. So we moved on to the local historical society property which is housed in a 1800s farm house. It was hot enough that we started in the shade. The finds were not great, but it was a pleasant day for detecting.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I got permission to dig a 1700's house in Boothbay, Maine today. It was a pleasant day for detecting with temperatures in the low 80's and light breezes keeping the bugs at bay. I was hoping to find more relics, but after 2 hours the best I got was an iron ring that was possibly a piece of horse tack and part of a brass shoe(?) buckle. $1.27 in modern change was found in the front yard where the family plays. I'm not showing the trash - scraps of metal and bike parts etc. The spigot handle was found way out in the lawn which was odd. They have lived there over 25 years and it is a much loved home and property with deep history. I'm planning on going back to see what else I can recover.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I got a call from a very anxious guy who had lost his car keys at Popham beach when his beach tent blew over. The park rangers had given him my card and I told him I could be there in half an hour. As I drove down I got caught behind several school busses and then construction that added 10 minutes to the drive. When I checked in with the rangers at the gate, they said he had just found the keys! So I paid my $6 admission and figured I would do a bit of detecting. I met the guy and he offered to compensate me (I charge $25 to come out and $25/hour) He had $15 cash in his wallet which I gratefully accepted. If not for slow traffic I might have been a hero!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It was a lovely warm breezy day, so I spent 45 minutes detecting and found 2 shiny coins and a bracelet, so it was not a total loss!</span><br />
